Closed Loop close in on Premier's Awards

A hotel, a farm and a university are all finalists for various sustainability awards thanks to their use of an on-site Closed Loop organics recycling and composting unit.

The Grand Hyatt Melbourne has been nominated for the Victorian Premier's Sustainability Awards in the large business category for becoming the first five-star hotel in the state to install a Closed Loop CLO300 system to remove food waste from the general waste stream.

Closed Loop's sister company, The Farmer's Place (a small working farm, cafe and farmers' market), is also a finalist in the Premier's Sustainability Awards in the small and medium enterprises category. The output of their CLO30 unit is used to grow the vegetables which are served at the cafe; any food waste from cafe meals is fed back into the system, demonstrating continual closed loop action in practice.

Meanwhile, Deakin University has been shortlisted as a finalist in the 2017 Green Gown Awards Australasia, which is being held by Australasian Campuses Towards Sustainability in November. A successful three-month trial using the Closed Loop CLO30 system at one of the university's corporate hospitality centres has shed light on the possibilities for food waste management across the education institute's 19 food outlets state-wide.

The diverse range of sites nominated demonstrates that anywhere where food waste is generated, Closed Loop machines can be found, according to sales and strategy manager Brendan Lee. Indeed, Closed Loop systems are currently in place across hospitals, shopping centres, schools, food manufacturers and mine sites. One sector the company would like to increase its coverage is within local governments, highlighting the benefits the system can bring to regional councils in particular as it has done for regionally based mining companies.
