SIMPLY CUPS CELEBRATES 3 YEARS
AND MILLIONS OF CUPS RECYCLED

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SIMPLY CUPS

It’s now been 3 years since Closed Loop launched Australia’s first cup recycling program.

On May 11, 2017, Simply Cups collected the first every cup. Today, the program collects cups in 5 states (plus the ACT) in Australia. More than 12.4 million cups have been rescued from landfill, with 7.8 million collected over the last 12 months.

PARTNERS MAKE THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY

The goal of Simply Cups is to transform waste into resources, and help grow Australia’s circular economy.

To achieve this, we have partnered with hundreds of AMAZING partners, including leading coffee destination brands, hundreds of commercial offices building tenants, logistic companies, and manufacturers of upcycled products.

We’d like to celebrate a few below.

7-ELEVEN : PIONEERING PARTNER

7-Eleven is the Pioneering Partner of Simply Cups, and have set-up the most cup collection stations, and divert more cups from landfill than any other company in Australia.

“In 2017, 7-Eleven partnered with Simply Cups to lead the cup recycling revolution in Australia. To date, we’ve installed Simply Cups units in over 620 of our 7-Eleven stores so that takeaway cups can be collected, processed and recycled. Whilst we’ve hit some fantastic milestones over these past three years, its only the tip of the iceberg. We continue to encourage customers to up the ante and deliver any brand of used coffee cup or straw to our cup collection points at store, and we’ll make sure they get recycled by Simply Cups.”
Angus McKay, Chief Executive Officer, 7-Eleven Australia.

Muffin Break partner with Simply Cups

MUFFIN BREAK

Muffin Break partnered with Simply Cups 2 years ago, and have played an important role in introducing cup recycling to shopping centres.

“Muffin Break sells over 20 million cups of coffee a year. We wanted to reduce our footprint in landfill from takeaway cups, so when Simply Cups entered the Australian market with a system to collect cups and transform them into new products, we knew they were the perfect fit. We continue to support Simply Cups more than ever, especially when our clients asks cafes to use takeaway coffee cups to ensure our safety.”
Natalie Brennan, General Manger, Muffin Break

OFFICE BUILDINGS

Most office workers bring their take-away cup back to their office, and Simply Cups has now rescued more than 6 million cups from the 200+ office buildings that have joined the program. We hope one day every office will recycle their cups.

ANZ (833 Collins St) leads the way having collected more than 720K cups from its global headquarters in Melbourne.

COMPLETING THE LOOP

With continued demand for products we can stay in the higher value uses of upcycling hierarchy. As Simply Cups grows, so too have the options for innovative recycling and upcycling outlets for cups – but these rely on demand for products made with cups.

Individual, corporate and government purchasing decisions have the strongest influence on circular economy outcomes.
