National Gallery of Victoria is the oldest and most visited gallery in Australia hosting a range of events, exhibitions and art performances.

The objective

Creating sustainable exhibitions

Throughout the planning phase of the recent Alexander McQueen: Mind Mythos Muse exhibition, the NGV were actively sourcing materials and products that would both reflect the theme as well as enhance the experience of the exhibition. In addition, those materials would have to pass the strict environmental requirements that are needed to ensure the safety of the artwork, whilst also upholding the strong sustainability values of the NGV.

The solution

Using environmentally friendly materials

As a flexible and sustainable building product made from waste materials including cups collected by Closed Loop’s Simply Cups program, saveBOARD was identified as a great fit for the NGV’s application. This material is available in a range of configurations including the black exposed internal lining board that was selected for the Alexander McQueen exhibition.

Before being approved for use within the exhibition, saveBOARD underwent rigorous testing by the team at the NGV to ensure the surrounding artwork would not be impacted by being in continued close proximity to the upcycled material.

As saveBOARD uses no chemicals, adhesives or formaldehydes in its construction it easily passed the test.

By selecting saveBOARD, the NGV proudly repurposed over 2,500kg of waste materials in their Alexander McQueen exhibition.
